Under the Federal Governments Allied Health Initiative, GPs can refer patients with a chronic medical condition to dietitians.
There is a limit of 5 services from all Allied Health Providers per calendar year.
Patients are considered eligible if their GP has completed the following prerequisite Chronic Disease Management items in the previous 2 years
For patients that are permanent residents of an Aged Care facility the GP must have contributed to a multidisciplinary team care plan prepared by the Aged Care Facility (item 731).
A copy of the TCA and Referral form for Allied Health Professionals, indicating the number of visits allocated for dietetic services, is required at the consultation.
If you have an eating disorder (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia
Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder or OSFED) you may qualify for an eating
disorder management plan. This can be drawn up by your GP or Psychiatrist.
An EDMP entitles you to 20 visits with a dietitian to
undergo supported, recognised programs for the treatment of your eating
Patients holding a DVA Gold Card are entitled to free services from a dietitian.
DVA will provide nutritional supplements and thickeners for Gold Card holders after they have been assessed and recommended by a dietitian.
